Blue-Green Economy International is a nonprofit environmental and community empowerment organization. Our work aims at sustainably exploiting both terrestrial and water resources to promote economic development and eliminate abject poverty while maintaining integrity of the ecosystem. We advocate for Blue Economy as the future of development to unleash the potential of our water resources. We understand that water resources are largely unexploited and when coupled with terrestrial resources can boost the global economy.
The blue economy has its origins in the green economy concept that stemmed from the Rio Earth Summit in 1992. Green economy transition begun in the early 1992 with a response to the increased public awareness and strengthened political will on sustainable development.
The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) defines the green economy as one ‘that results in improved human well-being and social equity, while significantly reducing environmental risks and ecological scarcities’. Green economy strategies tend to focus on the sectors of energy, transport, sometimes agriculture and forestry, while the blue economy focuses on fisheries sectors, Rivers, lakes, marine and coastal resources. Both incorporate strategies to address climate mitigation and adaptation with the aim of ensuring equitable sustainable use of the environmental resources
The seamless integration of the two environmental economic concepts inspired the formulation of the Blue Green Economy International Non-Profit Organization. Additionally, the organization was also inspired by the rising poverty levels among the communities dependent on water and land resources despite the vast resources despite the vast resource availability.
